A Brief History by Lisa Agosti
Faux Finish is a general term used to describe a wide variety of visual and textural effects. Derived from the French word "faux" (meaning false), these finishes can simulate many materials and surfaces.
Using various materials, the faux artisan can achieve a likeness of a natural stone, wood, brick, leather, plaster, or any other material. The term encompasses a broad range of techniques used throughout history on a myriad of surfaces. It has been done in one form or another on interior or exterior architectural surfaces, furniture, or other decorative and functional objects since the early ages.

Modern decorative painting techniques are based on a rich history of painted effects from many cultures and eras. Decorative painting has been practiced on every continent in a wide variety of styles. Throughout history, faux finishes have been used to create an illusion of a material when the original was not available, too expensive, or its use was technically unfeasible.
In recent years, decorative artisans have enjoyed a huge resurgence in popularity. Faux finishes can be used to recreate the plaster walls of a centuries old Italian villa, the aged beauty of a fresco, or to simulate a fine wood, to name only a few. Many product lines have been created to meet the increasing demand of the modern decorative artisan. The Faux Effects product line has set the standard for quality and durability. They offer a complete line of water-base materials for any faux finish project. Schools like The Finishing School have developed classes to instruct the artisan on the techniques and uses of Faux Effects materials. The Finishing School is one of the world's premier institutions for the study of decorative painting.

Not only does the master faux artisan have experience with material, but also in sensitive color manipulation, painting techniques and design harmony. The decorative artisans of Fantasy Finishes can accurately recreate marbles, fine woods, textiles, Old World European plasters and textured wall finishes, to name just a few. Faux artisans often work closely with interior designers, architects, builders and finish carpenters to enhance a project with faux finishes and decorative painting. These trades compliment each other by combining good design and color coordination with fine craftsmanship. Fantasy Finishes works closely with these trades to maximize the integrity of the design project.
There are many benefits of using applied techniques in your homes or office. Fantasy Finishes artisans can create custom colors to harmonize any finish with the décor of the space. Finishes are more durable than paper and repairs are easier and less costly than repairs to papers and other materials. Wall papers can be problematic and difficult to repair. When a change is due, faux finishes are easy to change: there is no wallpaper removal or damage to walls incurrd by removal of material because it can be painted over. Wall finishes offered by Fantasy Finishes are durable and completely customized to the individual project.
